Engineering Hydrology: Water Balance, Rain Gauge Adequacy & Runoff Modeling

DOMAINEngineering Hydrology, Water Resources
TOOLS & TECHNIQUESDouble-Mass Curve Analysis, Thiessen Polygon Method, Isohyetal Method, Water Balance Equations

This study conducted a complete hydrological evaluation of a 600 km² drainage basin, analyzing climate data, precipitation distribution, and catchment runoff response.

Key Engineering Scope

  • Catchment Water Balance: Formulated the hydrologic water budget equation (P = R + E + ΔS) to evaluate storage variation from 1,200 mm annual rainfall, 450 mm runoff, and 600 mm evapotranspiration losses.
  • Rain Gauge Network Adequacy: Evaluated network sufficiency across 6 gauging stations using statistical coefficient of variation (Cv = 20%) against a 6.5% allowable estimation error margin.
  • Missing Data & Double-Mass Curve: Reconstructed missing rainfall data using Arithmetic Mean and Normal Ratio methods, and verified record consistency via Double-Mass Curve analysis.
  • Spatial Mean Rainfall: Calculated areal precipitation across the catchment using Thiessen Polygon and Isohyetal contour methods to estimate peak basin discharge.
