Geometric Design Features & Road Safety Assessment of Taxila GT Road

DOMAINHighway Engineering, Transportation, Road Safety
TOOLS & TECHNIQUESAutoCAD Civil 3D 2024, Google Earth Pro, AASHTO Alignment Design

This study performed a geometric audit of the Taxila GT Road corridor (N-5), evaluating alignment deficiencies that influence traffic accidents and modeling optimized roadway geometry.

Key Engineering Scope

  • Corridor & Elevation Extraction: Extracted digital terrain models and existing corridor alignments using Google Earth and Civil 3D surface modeling.
  • Alignment & Curve Audit: Audited 11 critical horizontal curves, transition spirals, and stopping sight distances against AASHTO Green Book criteria.
  • Superelevation Optimization: Recalculated required superelevation rates (emax = 6%) and transition runoff lengths for speeds from 37 mph to 50 mph.
  • 3D Corridor Modeling: Developed redesigned road assemblies, paved shoulders, and grade profiles in Civil 3D to mitigate identified collision hotspots.
